Pilots Offshore Survival Equipment Ltd was founded in 2004 by Andrew Beattie with the initial intention of offering a simple way for the North Sea offshore helicopter companies to offer Short Term Air Supply Systems (STASS) to their pilots.  This was achieved by offering a comprehensive service including both the supply and servicing of the equipment.

As a North Sea pilot myself with over 15 years experience, and after reading the research on cold water imersion, I realised the very real need for the introduction of STASS to pilots.  After all, the offshore oil companies had already supplied their employees with rebreathers whenever they flew as passengers in the back of helicopters.

Whilst researching the project, it became apparent that despite a certified STASS pocket being available on the pilots Beaufort Mk44 life jacket, the stowage of the unit was a problem due to its regulator being unsecured.  This meant that the top of the STASS unit fell away from the life jacket whilst the pilot was seated and hampered operations in the cockpit, at the same time it pulled the two stoles of the life jacket apart resulting in it being ill fitting.  To rectify the problem the patented and approved STASS regulator retention strap was developed by Pilots Offshore Survival Equipment in close conjunction with RFD Beaufort.  The strap pulls the top of the STASS unit in behind the left hand stole of the jacket, but still allows for quick removal if required.  The strap design also includes a retractable lanyard, a nose clip and a mouthpiece protector.

From these beginnings, we have diversified into the provision of other survival equipment from life rafts to PLBs, all available for sale or on a rental basis to both professional and private aviators.  We have recently become the UK approved reseller of the award winning range of Winslow® aviation life rafts.

POSE is proud to have amongst its clients the Humberside Police Helicopter Support Unit, UK Search and Rescue, and the Irish Search and Rescue services.
